Best Fridge
Why You Should Trust Us
We mainly base our advice on two huge fact-finding programs that we carried out to obtain feedback from users of refrigerators. Then, we quantify and analyze the feedback. For this guide, although we did no actual testing on refrigerators, it is clear that our thorough research led to important trends which we could not have identified if we only had the opportunity to test them.
Wirecutter reader responses were the first big research project. More than 5,000 people responded to this survey. This survey gave us data on satisfaction levels by door brand and type as well information about reliability of fridges.
This was not a representative survey. We also collected data statistically significant on just seven brands, out of many. However, we believe that our survey data points to some deeper truths about the category. This includes the top-selling brands as well. Wirecutter user research leader Raquel Hamid, who conducted our survey and converted the data to usable figures, deserves a huge thank you. The other major source of information was an analysis of 28,000 customer reviews on Home Depot’s site, across 34 different refrigerator models from all the major brands and spanning door types and prices, conducted with the aid of an artificial-intelligence-driven tool called FindOurView . Even though this analysis covered only a few fridges out of hundreds, it was able to provide a great deal of information on the most important features and the areas that particular models excel at. It also helped us identify LG refrigerators with cooling issues. We also read a slew of other refrigerator reviews, info about reliability, and guides on how to pick and install fridges. For the previous editions of this guide we spoke with several experts in the industry, including dealers, brand representatives and technicians.
To be very clear: We haven’t done any hands-on refrigerator testing of our own. This is mainly due to logistics and pandemic protocol, as well as because it’s impossible to objectively test the refrigerators with hands-on usage. However, we have touched the majority of fridges in the guide. We’ve pulled the handles, wiggled shelves, and so forth.
The guide does not contain all of the information. It is not possible to do as thorough research into specific topics as built-in fridges. In the near future, we will be examining some of these topics more deeply. In the meantime, we think the research we’ve done can help a lot of people find a good fridge.

Why refrigerator picks are not necessary
No specific model recommendations have been made by Wirecutter. We would highlight the top refrigerators that we believe will make people happy. It was a common approach in previous versions of the guide, but this didn’t seem like the right way to go about the topic.
In this guide we still point you toward brands and general styles that stood out in our research, and we link to examples of specific models (and we may still earn a commission if readers end up making a purchase through those links, which is standard for Wirecutter ). We aren’t calling any model a pick or the best at this time. This is because it feels right for us. For one, refrigerators are so diverse, even just in terms of size, that we’d struggle to fit a representative list of “picks” onto one page that’s easy to read. An older version of this Guide attempted to address that problem, choosing only a few popular types and sizes. Unfortunately, many readers felt they were not able to use the fridges listed in our guide and left them out. A comparison is needed: The top 10 models that Home Depot sold in August 2018 had three sizes and four types of doors.
The category is subjective, so people may come up with very different opinions about many features. French-door or side-by-side? Unfortunately, there isn’t a useful performance measure that could distinguish between good and bad refrigerators. Furthermore, it’s hard to predict reliability and how long they will last.
The guide will help you to choose a fridge. You may choose to go with the model we have mentioned, or use the filtered searching function at a retailer’s web site. Lowe’s and Home Depot are all good options.
How To Pick A Fridge
To begin with, choose the size you need. Tons of articles about this are all over the internet, though this video from Home Depot is especially helpful. Here’s our advice, with a couple of tips that are often missing from other guides:
Take multiple measurements of your space (rather than the existing fridge) to find the maximum width, depth, and height. Seriously take multiple measurements of each dimension in case your floors turn out to be crooked. Be sure to measure trim and baseboards.
Allow for some ventilation by creating buffer space. Make it about 1 inch on the top and sides and at least 2 inches at the back. The fridge’s heat exchange may have to work harder if you pack it in tightly. According to all manufacturers, this can impact the refrigerator’s ability maintain proper temperature and may cause damage to its cooling system. The recommended lifespan of a fridge is 10 years.
Consider measuring out the remainder of your kitchen. You also need to think about the layout of your other kitchen areas. If you have a kitchen island, measure the distance from the wall to the edge of that counter to account for the door swing. A counter-depth or half-width door (such as a French-door, side-by-side, or French-door) may be the best options. Consider whether your refrigerator will fit close to the wall. Also, consider whether it will allow you to open the door wide enough to access crisper drawers and deli tray. A single-door fridge (like a top-freezer or bottom-freezer model), with the hinge on the opposite side from the wall, might be your best bet.
Your doorways should be measured. If you need to measure your doorways, remove the fridge doors.
A fridge can be any size as long it is compatible with your space. It’s possible to put a top-freezer fridge that is small and affordable in an area meant for large French-door models. It might look a little odd, but it’ll work fine. According to customer reviews and our reader survey, larger fridges are more popular than smaller. People tend to buy the largest fridge they can afford (often 36inches) as well as one with a deep shelf (34inches or more).
Decide the size you need. Larger fridges can make us happier, but smaller fridges have less benefit. Customer reviews show that 20 cubic feet is the ideal size for a fridge with 36 inch width, slightly lower than normal, or counter depth. Even if you have a standard-depth fridge that is deeper than your needs, a counter depth refrigerator might be worth looking at. Based on customer reviews and analysis, counter-depth fridge owners tend to love their refrigerators.

The tests
You have probably seen appliances perform best under certain temperatures. An appliance is made up of many electronic and mechanical components that work together harmoniously. The air inside your house can hinder certain parts’ ability to function at their peak, particularly in very hot or cold environments.
The ambient conditions can make refrigerators very sensitive. Refrigerators cool the air by drawing in it and cooling it until it reaches a cold temperature (usually 37°F). This is enough to freeze food and stop bacteria growth. In hot weather, the condenser and cooling coils have to work harder to cool the warmer air. A fridge that is not working well in cold temperatures will have trouble operating. You might have noticed, however, that the fridge’s temperature may drop if it is stored in a colder area than your kitchen refrigerator.
In order to minimize these temperature effects, every fridge is tested in a laboratory that sets the temperature at 72F +/– 5F. It also maintains an relative humidity of 50% +/– 15% RH. This basically makes it room temperature. In this way each fridge gets the best chance of performing at its highest and does not get penalized for having had to work with colder, or more humid, air than others.
Each refrigerator was tested over the course of one week, including a calibration day. We measure each fridge’s temperature and humidity.
* Temperature We recommend that the refrigerator and freezer be kept at 37 and 0 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively. With fridge temperatures higher than 37degF, you might have to start worrying about bacteria growth, as 40degF is the start of the bacteria “danger zone” . If the temperature of your freezer is higher than 0degF, it means that food may be not being frozen properly. We set the refrigerators to the appropriate temperatures and collect data over the course of the week. The temperature data tells us the relative temperature between the freezer and fridge, and how far the air temperature has remained at these ideal temperatures.
* Humidity Loss We will be focusing on the veggie crisper of our refrigerator for this test. The water is added to a flower foam ball and the day’s water loss rate is recorded. Because your leafy greens can dry quickly if they are too dry, humidity loss rates are very important. You can risk your fruit rotting if it is too humid. The

* Freezing Time After the refrigerator is connected, the freeze temperature (the freezing temperature of liquid) will be measured. This measure shows how fast your freezer and fridge can cool down foods or drinks that are just being placed in the refrigerator.
