Personal experience with apps for grills and smokers is that they are slow to respond, making it difficult to use. The only change in setup to go from smoker to grill is to flip the heavy-duty cast iron grates from the “smoke” side (which is beveled) to the “sear” side (which is flat). You can turn the temperature control to any setting you like. Though I don’t know how much the thermostat will regulate temperature, it can go up to 700 degrees.
Other Smokers I Tested
Let me be very clear. I did not pick the best, but all of my smokers performed admirably and would highly recommend them.
Oklahoma Joe’s Highland Reverse Flow Offset Smoker was slightly smaller and lighter than that of the Char-Griller. It didn’t retain heat quite as well the Char-Griller and took longer to get back up to temperature than either the Char-Griller or the Weber, though only by a few minutes not much if you’re doing a 10-hour cook. It can also be set up for direct heat grilling like the Char-Griller. However, the firebox is smaller so that there’s less cooking space. You have two choices for your smokestack configuration which allow you to customize it and make experiments.
Z Grills 450B Pellet Grill does everything you want from a pellet grill. It is easy to set up, use and requires minimal supervision. There has been some online musing that Z Grills could be a Traeger killer (Traeger being the biggest name in pellet grills) by offering solid equipment at much lower cost. It was exactly what I expected. It did not hold heat as well as my Masterbuilt. The digital display also seemed slightly inaccurate compared with my thermometer. Although I do not want to criticize that as all grills are subject to hot and cold spots, it was still very good. It doesn’t have the Wi-Fi connectivity of the Masterbuilt, but, as I said, that connectivity can be more burden than luxury at times. It can heat up to 700°, but it isn’t claimed that it can. However it is great for grilling and smoking. The best choice for a low-cost pellet grill is this one.
Charbroil Digital Electric Smoker wasn’t the best machine for me. The interface on the vertical smoker was tough to use and the app was predictably buggy. The temperature fluctuated more than the others and the smoke I got from my wood chips was not as good (as Randolph pointed out, these problems aren’t unique to the Charboil; it’s likely to be an issue for many electric smokers).
