A Cuisinart 2-Slice Plastic Toaster, the CPT-122, 2 Slot Compact Toaster. It was a simple to use toaster that brown bread quickly and evenly. Toasters aren’t known for their longevity, so we like that the Cuisinart is covered by a three-year warranty.
Amazon. $30. Wayfair Cuisinart 4-Slice Compact plastic Toaster. This is the most efficient four-slot toaster. The toaster browned bread evenly. However, if you have enough space we suggest choosing a toaster oven that is more versatile.
Amazon, $50, Wayfair Cuisinart CPT-122, 2-Slice Compact Plastic Toaster. It also has a four-slot variant, the Cuisinart CPT-142, 4-Slice Compact Plastic Toaster. They both made the most perfectly brown bread, despite being tested multiple times over several years. Cuisinarts have a variety of settings, easy-to use controls and stay cool batch after batch. Our research shows that most modern toasters use weaker heating elements, which can lead to them becoming more fragile over time. We read customer reviews that indicated there might be quality issues which could cause the Cuisinarts’ uneven toasting (though the long-term tests of two and two have been done since 2018, respectively). These issues don’t seem to be unique to Cuisinart toasters. Many other models look similar, even those that are more costly. The Cuisinart toasters come with a three-year warranty, which is more than the standard one-year warranty. This means that you can return it if you get a lemon.
It’s up to you who should get it
You may be looking for a brand new toaster after your old one died. Maybe it doesn’t toast evenly, can’t handle bagels, or burns bread too quickly. Before you purchase a toaster you need to be aware of the risks associated with poor quality control, poor heating elements and fragile electrical connections. Even if your toaster works great, they are vulnerable to failure. It is best to only spend what you consider reasonable on something that could last about five years. You don’t have to pay more for better quality. Hugh Rushing, a former executive vice-president of the Cookware Manufacturers Association said that while you might pay more for better quality, it doesn’t always mean you get better. A toaster oven is a better option than a slot-type toaster if you are looking for more versatility and can toast your own carbs. However, if you are short on space you might be considering a toaster with four slots or two. Four-slot toasters have double the bread making capacity. It is ideal for serving large families. A two-slot toaster takes up less space and is best for smaller kitchens or households with fewer mouths to feed.

Two- or four-slice toaster sizes are available. The toasting ability of a four slice toaster is doubled, however, it will take up more space. You should consider whether you require a four-slice model before buying a larger one. Because it will stay on your counters for many years, you want it to be as functional and reliable as possible. Black Friday appliances deals are right around the corner so it’s easier to choose.
Homes & Gardens’ team has tried and tested many of these toasters. The toasters have been tested to ensure that they are even and easy to use. However, you can choose to purchase a more versatile toaster, which will allow you to toast up to 4 slices at once.

We toasted more than 500 slices of bread to find these winners.
The guide was last updated October 2021, to ensure that all Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Technology Lab tested and approved products were in stock and easily accessible.
The market is wide for new toasters. Although it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when choosing the best one, it is understandable. Many are capable of toasting more than just a slice of bread. (Remember sweet potato toast?). Whether you want to toast a thick slice of artisan multigrain bread for smashed avocado toast with egg , a piece of sourdough for nectarine bruschetta or a slice of white for classic buttered toast, we’ve found a toaster to suit your needs.
Test toasters at The Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances Lab. Over the years, hundreds of appliances have been tested to determine which ones are the best. No crumb went unnoticed in our quest for perfect toast and to discover the best toaster on the market. To test how evenly and quickly they toast white bread, we tried over 58 toasters.
To evaluate their range, we placed toasted slices on a table side-by-side from light to dark. To compare the consistency of each batch, we toast them consecutively. We reviewed the owner’s manual and evaluated the ease of using the controls, surface temperatures and cleanability (we love a removable crumb tray!). We tested whether the slots were able to hold thick bagels and large slices of bread. Additionally, the slots were able to hold slices high enough that it is easy for people to grab them.

Our Top Toaster Picks
Cuisinart 2-Slice Digital Toaster w/ MemorySet.
While many toasters will make a golden-brown loaf, not all toasters have the same capabilities. However, it’s worth spending more time than simply toasting 120 pieces. Toaster quality can be measured beyond just how well bread has been toasted. Toaster pastries, such as bagels and frozen waffles are also worth consideration. To find the top toasters on the market, we tried them all.
Two new selections were added to this guide by us in February 2021. Cuisinart ViewPro Toaster Oven is no longer available. Since August 2019, the product was removed from our original story. We love many of our picks, even though they were not in the original test. Keep reading for our current list.
This toaster can toast a variety of bread types, including sweet, white, wheat, and English muffins. It also has a memory function that lets you remember how it was toasted. The LCD LCD screen is a great feature that shows you how much time you have to wait before the toaster pops. Defrost is an extended cycle that defrosts bread and toasts it at the desired temperature. By using the one-slice function, you can have your temperature gauge set to toast 1 slice for the perfect browning.

Taylor Murray Toasted breads have become a national staple. Some cooks spend a lot on expensive toaster ovens. Methodology for Toaster Review
In choosing the right toasters, I looked at reviews from consumers, experts opinions, consumer ratings, price range, features and looks. While I was careful to ensure consistency in toaster quality (in general, only toasters with a rating of four stars or higher) I also sought to encompass all current options, budget and high-tech.
Once I had narrowed the field to just 13 potential toasters, it was time to get started testing each model in my own kitchen. In order to get an idea of the effectiveness and functionality of each model, I tried three different things in my own kitchen: a simple bagel, white bread, and basic frozen waffle. The same two- and four-setting toaster settings were used for each item. I also checked the bagel, bread, and frozen toast settings. The “A Bit More”, and even the pastry-warming attachment, were additional features I tested.
I used as my judging criteria.
Use it quickly and easily: This toaster is easy to use (and fun!) The toaster was easy to use for all functions.
Performance: What was the performance of each toaster?
Aesthetics: How would a toaster view a counter from a table?
The value of the toaster: What is the cost for the convenience, performance, and aesthetics?

Toast is delicious and simple. You can call me a toast optimist but it doesn’t matter what you say. Don’t believe me? Take a look at this four-slice guide to the toaster!
You’re probably looking for the best toaster. To make it easy for you and me, beloved reader and toast fanatic, I selected top-quality toasters and made lots of toast using them.
So how did you test them? To test them, I made one batch of toast in each toaster on the medium setting. Online, you can find a variety of shades of toast. What I looked for was toast that is a good mix of golden and chewy. After the golden, crisp bread had popped I carefully examined each slice, making sure to check the degree of browning and the color. Also, to make sure the bread was evenly toasted from top to bottom.
When each toaster had cooled, I conducted a second round. This round consisted of making three batches of toast consecutively, without allowing the toaster to cool in between. Toasters that have temperature sensors will detect when the oven is heated and reduce time taken to get the same browning. After each toast, I also checked to ensure that the edges were not too hot. The best-performing toasters stayed either completely cool, or only got a bit warm after multiple batches of toast.

Our top picks
Zwilling Endigy 2-Slice Toaster Check Price. The toaster I used to make a lot of toast was accurate. This meant that it turned just the right amount of golden brown in each setting, cooked evenly, and provided complete coverage, even toasting from the edge. For a sleek and contemporary look, the toaster’s design is elegant and minimalistic without adding too many bells and whistles. You can toggle between three settings: a freeze setting, a bagel setting and a way to heat your bread without any color. The all-metal case meant that the toaster was only slightly warm on the sides. This happened even though it had been used for multiple toast batches. The dial on the front of the toaster lets you select a browning level between 1 and 7, but also serves as the “cancel” button if you push it in. It was superior in terms of price, performance and quality construction.
This toaster performed almost as well as the Best Overall pick, but it costs about $60 less at the time of publication and has a really cool viewing window so you can watch your toast brown. It is the longest-slot model I tried, and it may suit you if you buy unusual-shaped bread from the bakery. The slot is also extra wide to help accommodate thick-cut slices of bread, bagels, waffles, and other bread products. Similar to the Zwilling, the toaster has three buttons that toggle bagel, defrost, and heat settings. Additionally, there is a dial that adjusts the browning degree and acts as the “cancel” key. It didn’t brown quite as evenly in this toaster as Zwilling. It’s an excellent buy considering the price.
When I heard of this “smart toaster” brand, I confess to being a little skeptical. It has a large touch screen with tons of options and offers a lot of customization. The device seemed frivolous, if not a little gimmicky. Then I tried it out and felt ashamed. This is a wonderful toaster.
First off, there are tons of settings. The touch screen can also be used to swipe through images like Tinder for bread product searches. You can toggle between normal bread, toaster pastries and bagels as well as English muffins. The model I tested also had this feature. This model, however, gives all of those options, and more, including cinnamon raisin bread, multigrain bread, sourdough, unfrosted toaster pastries, and more, for a total of 34 bread types. The R270 also lets you select whether your bread is gluten-free. The R270 even allows you to buy an accessory panini press for bread, which is also available on the screen of your toaster.
Once you select your bread type, you can modify the settings further by selecting “fresh,” “frozen,” or “reheat,” and you can select a darkness level between 1 and 7 (the on-screen example gets darker or lighter, depending on which setting you choose). Once you are ready to start your toasting session click “start”. The bread is automatically lowered into the toaster, and is lifted back up when it’s finished with a friendly little chime to let you know your toast (or bagel or waffle, etc.) The bread is done. The stainless steel shell kept the sides cool even though it was hot after 3 batches of toast. As the most popular pick, the crumb tray can be found at the top of the toaster and not the bottom. An on-screen prompt reminds the toaster to empty its crumb tray once every week.
